Complete Guide to Wine Tasting in the Russian River Valley

January 23, 2026

If you’re a Pinot Noir or Chardonnay lover, chances are you’ve already looked into wine tasting in the Russian River Valley—an AVA within Sonoma wine country that consistently delivers some of my personal favorite wines.

Where Is the Russian River Valley?

Let’s get a lay of the land first. Sonoma wine country is expansive and made up of many different AVAs and sub-regions. The Russian River Valley is located in northern Sonoma County, about 55 minutes north of San Francisco, and sprawls across several towns including Sebastopol, Forestville, Santa Rosa, Windsor, and Healdsburg.

This AVA is relatively close to the coast (which is ideal for growing Burgundian grape varieties), features a wide range of soil types and microclimates, and is, of course, home to the Russian River itself. Cool coastal fog, warm sunny days, and varied terrain all come together to create a truly special place for wine growing.

What Kind of Wine Is Made in the Russian River Valley?

The Russian River Valley is hands down most famous for its Pinot Noir. Russian River Pinot has a distinct style: bright, juicy, red-fruit-forward wines that often burst with cherry, raspberry, and that signature cherry cola aroma right out of the glass. Yummmm.

Chardonnay is the other standout here. Thanks to cool foggy nights and warm days, Russian River Valley Chardonnay tends to strike a beautiful balance—fresh and vibrant with enough richness to keep things interesting.

What Are the Best Wineries in the Russian River Valley?

You could easily spend a full week wine tasting in the Russian River Valley and still not manage to visit every winery, as it’s an expansive area. There are currently around 70 wineries spread throughout the region. To help narrow things down, here are some of my favorite Russian River Valley wineries to visit.

Best Russian River Valley Wineries

William Selyem

Serious Pinot collectors, this one’s for you (though you probably already know that). William Selyem is pricey, but the wines are exceptional—beautiful, age-worthy Pinot Noir that absolutely lives up to the hype.

Kosta Browne

Another one for the serious wine collectors. Kosta Browne has earned its reputation, and yes—it really does live up to the hype. The wines are outstanding, especially the Pinot Noir. Their tasting room is located at The Barlow, which makes this an easy stop to pair with lunch, dinner, or a bit of shopping afterward.

Merry Edwards Winery

If you’re a Pinot Noir lover, you’re likely already familiar with Merry Edwards. Their wines are consistently excellent, and their Sauvignon Blanc is especially noteworthy. If you already know you love the wines, visiting is a great opportunity to stock up. That said, the tasting experience itself is a bit underwhelming compared to others in the area.

Gary Farrell

I love, love, love Gary Farrell. The wines are consistently delicious across the board, and the tasting experience is relaxed yet polished. Add in sweeping vineyard views and this is easily one of those places you’ll want to linger—and definitely snap a photo or two.

Auteur

Auteur opened its stunning Russian River Valley tasting room in 2025, and wow—it’s a showstopper. Their original location is in downtown Sonoma, but this second location off Wohler Road is something special. Floor-to-ceiling windows make it the perfect place to enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the surrounding vineyard views.

Flowers

Looking for the perfect wine country Instagram moment? The tasting cabanas at Flowers are a boho-chic dream. Beyond the aesthetics, their wines are excellent, and the food program is impressive. This is a great stop if you want a memorable experience that checks all the boxes. Great for a girls trip!

Iron Horse Vineyards

The absolute best spot for bubbles in the Russian River Valley. Iron Horse has truly mastered sparkling wine production, and despite producing world-class bubbles, the vibe here remains laid-back and approachable. If you can, try to visit during one of their oyster and sparkling wine events—and invite me, please!

Rochioli

Another legendary wine-growing family, Rochioli is a name you’ll recognize on many labels throughout the Russian River Valley. Their estate winery is charming, with beautiful views and a relaxed atmosphere. They produce excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that truly showcase the region.

Bacigalupi

No matter where you go in the Russian River Valley, you’re likely to hear the Bacigalupi name. They’re one of the most iconic wine-growing families in the area and also produce wines under their own label. Keep an eye out for Leo, the winery cat—he’s a total love bug and a highlight of the visit.

MaCrostie

MaCrostie is quaint, welcoming, and comes with lovely views of the vineyards. I absolutely love the design and interior of MaCrostie—can I live there?! This is a fun stop for groups, and everyone I’ve brought here has loved it. Bonus points for being dog-friendly.

Russian River Vineyards

Visiting with a group and looking for something a bit more casual? Russian River Vineyards is a great choice. Think wine, food, and often live music in a laid-back setting. It’s a fun, lively stop that feels less formal than many traditional tastings.

Copain Wines

If you know me, you know this is one of my favorite wineries EVER. It has a special place in my heart. It’s charming and laid back, yet the wines are absolutely fantastic. P.S. if you book a tasting with them use code WATCHMESIP for 50% off!

Bricoleur

Bricoleur is another excellent option for larger groups or anyone looking for a more casual tasting experience with food. You can enjoy a full lunch while tasting—pizzas, salads, fries, and more. They also offer picnic experiences around their pond and are very kid-friendly.

J Vineyards

If you love bubbles, J Vineyards is a must. Their sparkling wines are top-notch, and the tasting experience is elevated with a full culinary team on site. The Bubble Room offers a five-course food and wine pairing that’s one of the best in the valley—perfect if you’re looking for a special experience while indulging in sparkling wines. Definitely add this one to your girls trip itinerary.

Benovia

Benovia is one of those hidden gems that feels pleasantly off the beaten path. Still relatively undiscovered by many visitors, this winery produces beautiful Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Don’t skip the Grenache—it’s a standout and a nice break between all the Pinot.

Merriam Winery

Merriam Winery is seriously underrated. Tucked away off the beaten path, this family-owned winery is well worth seeking out. They produce a lineup of really great wines in a relaxed, welcoming setting. It’s dog-friendly and an ideal place to slow down and enjoy a more low-key tasting experience.

Naidu Wines

Naidu Wines is a tiny, boutique winery run by Raghni Naidu. Woman- and Indian-owned, this label brings a fresh perspective to Sonoma County wine. The wines are vibrant and thoughtfully made, and tasting here feels personal and intentional—perfect if you enjoy discovering small producers with a unique point of view.

Orsi

Orsi is a charming little winery a few minutes from downtown Healdsburg. Known for growing and producing delicious Italian varieties, Orsi will transport you to Italy with each sip. Don’t forget to try their Montepulciano—it’s one of my favorites.

Tips for Planning the Perfect Russian River Valley Wine Tasting Day

  • Make reservations: Many wineries are appointment-only, especially on weekends.

The Russian River Valley is one of the most special wine regions in California, especially for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay lovers. Between the cool coastal influence, diverse microclimates, warm hospitality, and passionate winemakers, it’s a place you’ll want to return to again and again. At least I do!
